Facial Traumatology:

Reduction (setting a fracture) and immobilization are the two basic principles followed by the plastic surgeon to treat face bone fractures. The final results of the treatment must provide the patient the best results in terms recovery and aesthetic function.

As a result of major accidents, soft tissue sprains are common. Nevertheless, it is not rare to see a patient with a background of a severe face impact and several tiny comminute fractures in the facial bones, without further soft tissues disruption except for some superficial abrasions.

The best time to set face fractures is at the initial operation. This means that the plastic surgeon must take the patient to the operating room immediately after coming in the ER. A cautious surgeon knows that only lifesaving measures require immediate surgical intervention in the operating room.

Setting fractures of face bones may be carried out several days after the injury. In general, spinal cord, intracranial, intrathoraxic, intraabdominal injuries and open limb fractures area treated first.
